A great Peak District Photography location

I was recently out in the Peak District making my latest video which will go live this weekend (25th July).

I love to get out to far-flung, exotic locations, but sometimes everything you need is right on your doorstep! After a full day at work, I needed somewhere I could get to within an hour, that had fantastic photo opportunities and would be easy to access without too much of a hike. Stanage Edge turned out to be the perfect spot.

Located a couple of miles to the north of Hathersage in the English Peak District, Stanage Edge is a gritstone escarpment that offers amazing vistas out over the Hope Valley. On a typical evening I can get there by car in just 46 minutes and even better, it’s easily accessible from either Hollin Bank or Hook’s carparks, the latter being free if you manage to get a spot. From there it’s just a 10-15 minute walk to the top.

Don’t miss the millstones along the way, which make a great foreground subject amongst the ferns that decorate the hillside. Here is a shot that didn’t make it into the video.

It was a very warm evening with a mostly clear sky and I got a fairly decent sunset. I used the evening to compare two Nikon Z lenses, the 24-70mm f4 S and the 24-200mm f4-6.3mm VR. One of which I will be taking with me on an upcoming trip where I need to pack light.
