Here are the four lenses I picked out, along with full technical specifications.
1. AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED
This is a pro-spec DX standard zoom lens. It’s sharp, focuses quickly and has a maximum aperture of 2.8. For a crop sensor lens, it’s very heavy, but it is built to last with an all metal construction that is weather sealed.
Focal length: 17-55mm
Maximum aperture: f/2.8
Minimum aperture: f/22
Lens construction: 14 elements in 10 groups (3 ED glass elements and 3 aspherical lenses)
Diameter x length (extension from lens mount): Approximately 85.5 x 110.5 mm/3.4 x 4.4 in.
Weight: Approximately 755 g/26.6 oz
2: Tokina AT-X 11-16 f/2.8 PRO (IF) DX
Although it suffers from a little chromatic aberration, this wide-angle bargain is sharp, well built and features a constant maximum aperture of 2.8.
Focal length: 11-16mm
Maximum aperture: f/2.8
Minimum aperture: f/22
Lens construction: 13 Elements in 11 Groups
Angle of view: 104°-82°
Minimum focus distance: 0.3m
No. of diaphragm blades: 9
Filter attachment size: 77mm
Dimensions: 84×89 mm
Weight: Approximately 550g g/19.4 oz
3. AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G
Don’t let the cheap price fool you, this is a fantastic lens. It’s very small and light, it’s super sharp and it has a maximum aperture of 1.8. Great in low light, and for times when you need a shallow depth of field.
Focal length: 35mm
Maximum aperture: f/1.8
Minimum aperture: f/22
Lens construction: 8 elements in 6 groups (with one aspherical lens)
Angle of view: 44°
Minimum focus distance: 0.3 m/0.98 ft.
Maximum reproduction ratio: 0.16x
No. of diaphragm blades: 7 (rounded)
Filter attachment size: 52mm
Diameter x length (extension from lens mount): Approximately 70 x 52.5 mm/2.8 x 2.1 in.
Weight: Approximately 200 g/7 oz.
4. AF-P DX NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3G ED VR
Telephoto lenses don’t come much lighter or smaller than this. Although it’s fairly slow in the aperture department, it more than makes up for it with fast, accurate focussing, sharp optics and an extra-low-dispersion (ED) glass element to help minimise chromatic aberration.
Focal length: 70-300 mm
Maximum aperture: f/4.5-6.3
Minimum aperture: f/22-32
Lens construction: 14 elements in 10 groups (1 ED glass element)
Angle of view: 22°50′-5°20′
Minimum focus distance: 1.1 m
Maximum reproduction ratio: 0.22 x
No. of diaphragm blades: 7 (rounded)
Filter attachment size: 58 mm
Diameter x length (extension from lens mount): Approximately 72 × 125 mm
Weight: Approximately 415 g
